I thought I was going to break the knob/shifter. After 15 minutes I went to plan "B" a strap wrench. I wrapped the stock shift knob with some anti slip rubber/foam material and used a strap wrench.

I thought that was a pain, but getting it back into the groove is even harder. I only nicked it up in one spot, but the whole process took 20-30 minutes. Hope this helps.
